The City of Brampton, in partnership with Sport Tourism Canada (STC), has released its first-ever Sport Tourism Strategy, marking a significant step forward in positioning sport hosting as a priority for the city’s economic and community development.
The strategy outlines how Brampton can leverage its diverse population, extensive sport infrastructure, and strong community base to attract and deliver a wide range of sport events from local tournaments to national and international competitions. By making sport tourism a formal priority, Brampton is ensuring that sport hosting is embedded in its long-term planning, helping drive economic impact, create jobs, and build community pride.
“Brampton is one of Canada’s most dynamic and diverse cities, and our new Sport Tourism Strategy positions us to be a national leader in sport hosting,” said Patrick Brown, Mayor of Brampton. “With world-class facilities, a prime location, and a community representing more than 250 cultures, Brampton is uniquely positioned to showcase both high-performance competition and culturally significant sports like cricket, kabaddi and field hockey. Sport is about more than competition—it’s about community, culture and connection—and Brampton is ready to lead the way.”
Sport Tourism Canada, the national authority in sport tourism, partnered with Brampton to design the strategy, bringing expertise in research, economic impact analysis, and destination planning. Established in 2000, STC has supported communities across the country in growing their sport tourism portfolios and building sustainable hosting strategies.
“This strategy demonstrates Brampton’s commitment to sport hosting as a priority,” said Sheena McCrate, CEO of Sport Tourism Canada. “STC was proud to bring our expertise to this project, and we encourage other destinations to take similar steps. A formal strategy not only strengthens sport hosting capacity, but it also ensures that events deliver measurable economic, cultural, and social impact.”
