In 2019, Durham Region proudly hosted the Ontario Parasport Games. This was my first time leading a multi-sport event—and what an eye-opener it was! From transportation logistics to hotel room coordination to meal planning and committee dynamics, the volume of details was staggering. And yes, there was a bit of pressure—we wanted everything to be just right (or as close as possible!) and to deliver an unforgettable experience for the athletes.

When the day of the Opening Ceremony arrived and I stood above the atrium at Abilities Centre and looked down at the sea of athletes gathered below, I was filled with emotion. I don’t think I’ll ever forget that moment. We did it. After months of planning, navigating highs and lows, and thanks to the incredible support and commitment of our partners and volunteers, we were finally welcoming the athletes to our community. We were about to host an event whose impact would extend far beyond that weekend. That moment brought it all into focus—this is why I loved my work in sport tourism: it creates spaces where athletes shine, communities unite, inclusion thrives, and legacies are born.

The Ontario Parasport Games will always hold a special place in my heart. Hosting in 2019 and then again in 2023 were by far the most meaningful experiences of my sport tourism journey, and my professional life so far.
