In February 2023, Strathcona County proudly hosted the Special Olympics Alberta Winter Games. To enhance awareness and promote inclusion, we launched an ambassador program in partnership with Pembina, employing Special Olympics athletes in marketing, media, and community relations roles. This initiative aimed to represent athletes on our staff, educate the community on inclusion, and foster a strong team culture.

Three Special Olympics athletes were hired as ambassadors, with four key objectives:

  1. Build community awareness about the Games.
  2. Gain insights from athletes to improve the event.
  3. Highlight inclusion in sports, workplaces, and the community.
  4. Educate staff on inclusion-related topics.

Ambassadors conducted interviews, gave presentations, held press conferences, and created social media content. They provided feedback on accessibility, mentored the community, and promoted the Games and sponsors.

The program significantly impacted workplace culture, excitement for the Games, and inclusion in recreation. Ambassadors had a strong social media presence, attended events, and promoted local recreation stories, creating a buzz and supporting social change. This initiative positively influenced sport tourism in our community and laid the groundwork for diversity and inclusion at future Games.
