Notice is hereby given, that the Annual General Meeting of members of Sport Tourism Canada (hereafter called STC) will be held on Wednesday, March 11, 2026, at the hour of 12:30pm (Eastern Time) at the Hilton Meadowvale in Mississauga, ON. Members are reminded that voting by proxy is permitted.

CALL FOR NOMINATIONS – STC DIRECTORS 2026
Sport Tourism Canada (STC), a non-profit organization established in November 2000, is committed to increasing Canada’s capacity to attract and host sport tourism events. STC is seeking individuals interested in serving on its Board of Directors. Qualified candidates are encouraged to apply by submitting an online nomination on, or before Thursday, January 29, 2026 at 5:00pm (Eastern Time). Online forms can be found here. A Nominations Committee will review all nominations and recommend a slate of candidates to the 2026 Annual General Meeting scheduled for Wednesday, March 11, 2026.
STC NOMINATIONS COMMITTEE
The STC Nominations Committee is in the process of nominating:
- Up to 7 (seven) board members for the 2026-2029 term of office.
A. STC NOMINATIONS COMMITTEE GUIDELINES
PURPOSE
The purpose of the Nominations Committee is to select candidates from the Canadian sport tourism industry to fill open positions on the STC Board of Directors.
PROCESS
The Nominations Committee will be composed of four (4) members including the Chair, two (2) Board members, and CEO. The Nomination Committee will use the following process:
- Posting of Open Positions – The positions will be posted on the STC web site immediately and will close Thursday, January 29, 2026 at 5:00pm (Eastern Time).
- Inclusive Pool of Talent – The Nominations Committee seeks to establish an inclusive pool of candidates to ensure equity, diversity, linguistic and geographic factors among member applicants as well as the organizations they represent.
- Final List of Candidates – The Nominations Committee will recommend a final slate of candidates to the Board. The Nominations Chair will ask the Board for permission to proceed to the membership for approval of the slate at the 2026 Annual General Meeting.
- Notification – All applicants will be notified of their status prior to the Annual General Meeting.
- Announcement of the new Board Members – At the next Annual General Meeting in March 2026, the Board slate will be announced to the membership.
- Term – The term commences at the adjournment of the 2026 Annual General Meeting.
B. GENERAL ROLE OF A BOARD
The Board consists of Officers (Chair, Vice Chair, Treasurer, Secretary, Past Chair), up to nine (9) other members and the CEO. The Officers constitute the Executive Committee. The term of Board Members is two (2) years. The Board is the governing body of the Association. The Board deliberates and acts only by consensus during a properly called and noticed meeting with a quorum present.
C. RESPONSIBILITIES
A Board Member is responsible to represent the membership of STC. The role requires the Board Member to be accountable for the following duties:
- Meeting Participation – The Board Member is expected to participate in all meetings of the Board including conference calls and face-to-face meetings.
- Committee Participation – The Board Member is also expected to actively participate or Chair one or more STC Committees, as amended from time to time.
- Be Informed – The Board Member must be informed about the affairs of the Association to properly perform their duty to act in the best interest of the Association. The expectation is the Board Member prepares for each Board conference call or meeting by reviewing all material provided with the meeting agenda. The Board Member is also expected to listen to, empathize with and share the needs of the membership.
- Conflict of Interest and Confidentiality – The Board Member shall not participate in any Association decision when the Board Member has a material financial interest in the transaction in question without first informing the Board of the interest and following proper procedures.
D. DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS
- Minimum of five (5) years senior sports/tourism organization management/sport events hosting experience
- Demonstrate leadership in current position
- Have the ability to formulate and implement strategic plans
- Demonstrate the ability to formulate and make verbal presentations
- Strong stakeholder relations with municipalities, NSO/MSOs and government
At this time, the Board of STC is interested in hearing from candidates who can broaden our regional and sector perspectives, including applicants from the province of Quebec and/or representatives of the sport organization sector (ie. NSO, P/TSO, MSO, and other events rights holders).

WHAT IS SPORT TOURISM?
Sport tourism is any activity in which people are attracted to a particular location as a sport event participant, an event spectator, or to attend sport attractions or business meetings.
WHO ARE THE MEMBERS OF THE STC? WHY SHOULD I BE A MEMBER?
STC’s members include municipalities from every province including major metropolitan areas and small communities across Canada. Many national, provincial and multi-sport organizations are also members as well as suppliers to the industry (hotels, event management companies, airlines, etc.). IS THERE BENEFIT IN SMALLER COMMUNITIES JOINING STC OR DOES STC MAINLY SERVE LARGER MUNICIPALITIES?
The recent increase in activity in the sport tourism industry is a phenomenon that has been evident not only in major metropolitan areas, but in smaller communities across Canada as well. Although major international events such as the Olympic Games tend to receive most of the media profile, the critical mass of activity in sport tourism continues to occur at the community level. The programs and activities of STC are reflective of this reality as it continues to develop the tools necessary for communities of all sizes to become active in the industry at all levels.
HOW IS THE BOARD OF DIRECTORS ELECTED AND FOR HOW LONG?
The Board of Directors is comprised of 16 individuals, elected in staggered terms of two years duration. Elections are conducted annually at the Annual General Meeting.
HOW OFTEN DOES THE MEMBERSHIP GET TOGETHER?
The STC members gather annually at STC events and at the Annual General Meeting in March. Committee members may meet more regularly via conference or video calls.
WHAT IS SPORT EVENTS CONGRESS?
Sport Events Congress is Canada’s largest annual gathering of sport, tourism organizations, event management firms and other industry professionals. Delegates are treated to best-practices presentations, keynote speakers, networking socials and the business-to-business Sport Events Exchange, an events marketplace where national and multi-sport organizations have the opportunity to meet one-on-one with municipal representatives interested in hosting events in their communities. Sport attendees typically include event volunteers and staff, executive directors and CEO’s of national sport organizations, event managers & planners, marketing personnel and individuals responsible for partnership development. Municipal attendees include marketing personnel, city representatives, sport council staff and more!
