Sport Tourism Canada’s STEAMPRO economic impact assessment has shown that the 2025 Alberta 55+ Summer Games generated approximately $1.25 million in total economic activity in Alberta, including nearly $1.04 million in Leduc.

Hosted in the City of Leduc from August 21-24, 2025, the Alberta 55+ Summer Games welcomed more than 1,100 participants aged 55 to 90+, competing in 21 sport, cultural, and recreational events across 10 venues throughout the city. The Games brought together athletes, supporters, volunteers, and spectators from across Alberta and beyond, creating a vibrant four-day celebration of active living and community connection.

The Games attracted visitors who made a clear commitment to the host destination, with more than 80% of out-of-town attendees staying overnight in Leduc. This overnight visitation helped drive tourism-related spending across local accommodations, restaurants, retail, and transportation, supporting businesses throughout the community during the event period.

Beyond immediate visitation, the Alberta 55+ Summer Games also delivered long-term destination value. Survey results show that more than nine in ten attendees indicated they are likely to return to Leduc in the future, reflecting positive visitor experiences and increased awareness of the city as a welcoming host for sport and community events.

“The STEAMPRO assessment through Sport Tourism Canada provided evidence-based insights that demonstrate the return on investment for the 2025 Alberta 55+ Provincial Summer Games,” said Janet Guthrie, Sport Tourism Coordinator for the City of Leduc. “These findings show that supporting sport and recreation for older adults is not only economically sound but also essential for healthy aging, reducing isolation, and fostering vibrant communities.”

“The Alberta 55+ Summer Games highlight the important role community-level sport events play in supporting local economies,” said Derek Mager, Sport Tourism Canada’s Senior Consultant and Program Manager of Economic Impact, who analyzed the data and prepared the report. “Strong overnight visitation and high return intent demonstrate the value these Games deliver for host communities like Leduc.”
